Copacabana

The 4 kilometer long beach of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro hardly needs any introduction. The beach is named after the virgin of Copacabana (Bolivia). It’s name derives from Quechua,  an indigenous language that is still spoken in Peru and Bolivia. It means ‘place of light’. On the beach that has the shape of a crescent moon, you see not only beautiful cariocas (as women from Rio are called) in tiny bikini’s, but also a lot of people doing sports like soccer and volleyball.

Paraty

Paraty is a well-preserved example of how Brazil must have looked from a few centuries ago. The old town attracts many visitors from Rio and Sao Paolo every year. Paraty was once a place populated by smugglers. That past is honored by a fleet of old (pirates) ships that take you to the islands and idyllic beaches off the coast of Paraty. The area of Paraty consists of rainforest where fast-flowing rivers and waterfalls have free play. You can easily book an excursion to discover this ‘paradise’.

Ilhabela

Further south you will pass the island ‘Ilhabela’. A ferry brings you in fifteen minutes to the island. On the west side of the island some beautiful beaches are waiting for you. From here you have a beautiful view of the mainland of Brazil. If you want to discover the rest of the island, you will have to rent a car. The beaches on the very sparsely populated east side of the island are still unspoilt.

 Santos

Santos is the city that is home to the football club of the same. It is the club where Pele showed his skills. In the largest port in Brazil it is a coming and going of ships that export coffee and sugar. Santos Beach is 6 kilometres long. Along the entire lenght of the beach you’ll find a botanical garden. Early in the morning the beach is already full of people. It seems like the whole city is jogging, doing morning gymnastics, or taking a brisk morning walk on the beach. A visit to the nearby aquarium is definitely worth it.

Florianopolis

Florianopolis, called Floripa by the residents, is considered the best city to live in Brazil. The 340 long and therefore the longest suspension bridge in Brazil, Hercilo Luz, was for a long time the only connection between the island of Santa Catarina and the continent. This beautiful bridge dates from the 1920s. With over 40 beaches, the island of Santa Catarina is a popular place for many beach lovers. In the middle of the island you also find a large lake, Lagoa da Conceicao, ideal for water sports. For the past 10 years, this zona bonita in the south of Brazil has become a popular destination.
