In Italy during the 1930s, Libera Valente (Claudia Cardinale) actively opposes the fascist government of the dictator Mussolini. After fostering the flight of a political prisoner, she is sentenced to three years of house arrest in the Liperi Islands. There, Libera meets Sandro (Bekim Fehmiu), another internee, for whom she develops a passion.
