"I got shot one time/in my back with a nine/bullet came right out/man I promise I ain't lyin'/I got the scar to prove it/fought the war to do this/got to let the world know that God brought me through this "
That simple refrain from the third cut of Shei Atkins' sophomore effort, 2006's 'The Lita Mae Show,' tells you everything you need to know about the Grammy nominated Inspirational / R&B songstress whose, soulful style and straightforward, honest lyrics have made her a favorite among gospel and secular music fans alike.
When did you start singing?
I started singing when I was four years old. That's what my mother told me.
What are your influences?
Honestly what influences me is seeing the state of the world. It hurts me to see so many people hurting, sick, and going through so many things. It's not a certain person, you know what I'm saying.
You had not an easy past, to what extend does this reflect on your music?
It reflects all in my music because those songs were made from my life and everything that affected my life in a positive and a negative way.
How would you describe a perfect song?
Hmmm......In my opinion, any song that has a great melody, great arrangements and great music that you can never forget and want to hear it all the time.
What do you want to reach as a musician?
I want to reach the hearts of people and inspire them to continually to strive to have a happy and peaceful life.
How is your career going so far?
I believe it's going great. I'm learning a lot and I'm continually growing.
Any plans for a new album?
As a matter of fact there are plans. Right now I'm praying and asking God who and what direction he wants me to go with this one.
